House Of The Sleeping Beauties
House of the Sleeping Beauties is an opera directed by Guy Cassiers, composed by Kris Defoort and choreographed by Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui. The novel The House of the Sleeping Beauties is written by Japanese author and Nobel Prize winner Yasunari Kawabata. The book recounts the visits by the old Mister Eguchi to a strange, tender brothel, where older men can spend the night beside the warm bodies of sedated, very young girls. It is a story about goodbyes, old age and death.
Working closely with dancer Kaori Ito on the choreography, Cherkaoui imagines for Cassiers' scenography three different nights in which the old man sees the girl sleeping. The first night Kaori behaves very virgin-like in a huge vertical dress. During the second night she's suspended in a cloudy dress of red and pink roses, and during the last night she moves as a spider with hardly any sheet to cover her body with.
