Tempus Fugit
Invited by the Festival of Avignon and coproduced by the late Pina Bausch's Tanztheater Wuppertal, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui created Tempus Fugit as a response to the darkness of Foi. Focusing this time on migration of birds and people, on the natural flow of time and gravity, this piece had a very different tone and pace; it was much lighter and more innocent, like a child's drawing. Set in a forest of climbable poles suggesting trees as much as a metro station or revolving doors, a bunch of childlike similarly clothed students grow up quickly to become very different cultural Technicolor icons of migration. Each character is a distinct immigrant to the other, they interact with each other through rotation and gravity, humor and love. Musical partner Weshm brings mediterranean musical traditions to life in a contemporary way. Circus artist Ali Ben Lotfi Thabet brings in the technique of Chinese pole climbing. Tribal dances mix with folklore, Bollywood fantasies come to life and tango surfaces (an eternal kiss shared by Lisi Estaràs and Cherkaoui himself); the colorful cast has no limits and dares to play the game of the overdose with humor and harmony.
