Dunas
'Dunas is, of course, inspired by dunes, sand, its grains and its capacity for metamorphosis. Both Maria and I are enthusiastic about exploring the desert that lies before us. Dunas is born out of a desire for freedom. Freedom also means risk and nothing to hold on to. Like in a desert, we are free to take any direction, but are aware of the possibility to get lost.’ Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui
In honor of their mutual admiration for each other flamenco dancer María Pagés and Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui decided to share the stage and create a common universe. Sand, the desert, dunes and their personal heritage became the pillars of Dunas. Within a set created of veils and fabric, they play with shadows and draw on each other. They use the rhythm of their feet to find a common pulse. Layers are peeled off, sources are found and reshaped, images drawn in the sand evoke symbols and truths, and are swiped away in an instant.
Teaming up with musicians from Spain, Morocco and Poland, with touches of flamenco and original compositions of Szymon Brzóska and Rubén Lebaniegos, the music represents the roots of both choreographers. Free of any narrative, the performance is a journey to discover the poetry between Pagés and Cherkaoui.
