Based in North America, Mark S. Doss has performed eight major roles at the famed Teatro alla Scala in Milan, including Escamillo in Carmen, Argante in Rinaldo, Jochanaan in Salome, and Amonasro in Aida. His awards include First Prize in the International Verdi Competition, Finalist Winner in the Metropolitan Opera National Auditions and the National Institute for Music Theatre’s George London Opera Prize. Elsewhere he has performed the Dutchman (Der fliegende Holländer) for Teatro Regio, Turin and Teatro Comunale di Bologna; with further lead roles being Escamillo (Carmen) in the Arena di Verona, Amonasro at the Wienerstaatsoper and Royal Opera Covent Garden, Jochanaan at the Teatro Real Madrid, Deutsche Staatsoper Berlin and São Paulo; Simone (Eine florentinische Tragödie) in Turin, the four villains (Les Contes d’Hoffmann) for New National Theatre, Tokyo; Macbeth at Dorset Opera, Méphistophélès (Faust) in Oviedo and Santa Fe; and Alfio with Royal Opera Covent Garden, Teatro de la Maestranza and Hawaii Opera Theater. Role creations include the Colonial Soldier in Nicholas Lens’s Shell Shock at La Monnaie, and Cinque in Amistad with Lyric Opera of Chicago. Recent engagements found him appearing in an east coast recital tour (with a in New York City debut recital), as Amfortas in Parsifal (Teatr Wielki Poznan), Scarpia in Tosca (Welsh National Opera); Méphisto in Faust (Dorset Opera) and Balstrode in Peter Grimes (Teatro Comunale di Bologna).  Upcoming engagements include a debut at Dutch National Opera, and a debut with Dallas Opera in The Flying Dutchman, as well as the World Premiere of The Time of Our Singing at La Monnaie in Brussels.

In concert he has sung with the major orchestras of San Francisco, Philadelphia, Cleveland, Chicago and Toronto. His discography includes a Grammy Award-winning recording of Handel’s Semele.
